A recent video of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, addressing victims of Fulani herdsmen attacks in Benue State has stirred controversy. In his speech, he appeared to mention Hyarev and Tiv separately, which many interpreted as a mischaracterization, since Hyarev are a subgroup within the Tiv ethnic identity.

This perceived distinction has sparked outrage, especially among Hyarev communities, who feel sidelined or misrepresented. Social media reactions have been swift and intense, with many accusing the SGF of fueling the long-standing tension between Hyarev and Kparev, two major Tiv subgroups.

Was this a genuine mistake or a reflection of deeper political sentiments?

How should leaders speak about ethnic identities to avoid inflaming divisions?

What impact might this have on Tiv unity and peace efforts in Benue State?

Let’s discuss how such statements, intentional or not can shape public perception and community relations.

Saint Neutral: I don't think his intention was to create more issues but it was out of unconsciousness. He wasn't careful with his words because of the situation. If you watch the video critically you will discover that he was not intentional about it. The statement is now looked at in a different angle but I think he was not intentional though. 1 year ago
